Cain and Abel
Biblical Text
Translation by Rabbi Shai
Gluskin
4:1Now the man knew his wife Eve, and she became
pregnant andhad Cain, saying, "I have gained a man child
with the help of the Adonai."
4:2 She then gave birth to his brother Abel. Abel became
a shephard, and Cain became a farmer.
4:3 After some time, Cain brought an offering to the
Adonai from his crops;
4:4 and Abel, for his part, brought the best of the
firstlings of his flock. Adonai paid attention to Abel and
his offering,
4:5 but to Cain and his offering He paid no attention.
Cain was really upset and it showed on his face.
46 And Adonai said to Cain, "Why are you so upset, and
why has your face fallen?
4: 7 Surely, if you do right, you can pull yourself
together. But if you do not do right, sin knocks at the
door; you'll want to sin, yet you rule over that
desire."
4:8 Cain said to his brother Abel "... " When they were
in the field, Cain set upon his brother Abel and killed
him.
4: 9 Adonai said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?"
And he said, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?"
4:10 Then Adonai said, "What have you done? Your
brother's blood cries out to Me from the ground!
4:11 You shall be more cursed than the ground, which
opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your
hand.
4:12 If you till the soil, it shall no longer yield its
strength to you. You shall wander the earth forever."
